He then joined NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation) as the Director of Finance in 2018.
Mukherjee currently holds the additional charge of Chairman cum Managing Director (CMD) of NMDC. NMDC is an Indian public sector undertaking, that is involved in the exploration of iron ore, copper, graphite, coal, etc. According to reports, it is India’s largest producer of iron ore. The market capitalisation of the company as of October 3, 2023, is Rs 43,461 crore. NMDC’s share price was at Rs 147.85 on Tuesday (October 3).
Amitava Mukherjee has demonstrated his acumen as the director of finance in NMDC as it recorded the best financial performance in the history of the company. NMDC showed high turnover, profit before tax and profit after tax in the Financial Year 2012. According to the information given on the official website of NMDC, before joining, he worked as General Manager (Finance). He worked as the General Manager at Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for three years.
Amitava has a Master’s in Commerce degree from Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur. He has also gained experience as a cost accountant. As per reports, during his service in IRAS from 1997-2016, he held key positions in the Eastern Railway department. He was also awarded the National Award for Excellent Services in 2006 during this tenure. Before joining IRAS, he worked in Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) from 1994-1997.
The government has extended the tenure of Amitava Mukherjee’s additional charge as CMD of NMDC till November 19 this year. “Ministry of Steel has communicated that the additional charge presently assigned to Amitava Mukherjee, Director (Finance), NMDC Ltd has been extended for a further period w.e.f. 01 .09.2023 to 19.11.2023 i.e. the date of completion of his tenure as Director (Finance), NMDC, or till a regular incumbent joins the post, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest,” the official statement stated.
