Classy Spain send Women's World Cup warning | The Express Tribune

Image
[ad_1] WELLINGTON: Rampant Spain issued a Women's World Cup warning on Friday with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica while Switzerland ensured there would be no fairytale debut for the Philippines. Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was meanwhile the hero for Nigeria by saving a penalty to earn them a 0-0 draw with Olympic champions Canada. Spain's build-up to the tournament in Australia and New Zealand was clouded by a simmering row involving a group of 15 players who refused to feature under coach Jorge Vilda. Three eventually returned to the squad for the World Cup and one of them, Aitana Bonmati, was on the scoresheet in Wellington as La Roja launched wave after wave of attacks at the overwhelmed Costa Rican defence. An own goal put Spain on their way and after Bonmati netted, Esther Gonzalez made it three in a ruthless six-minute first-half spell to kill off Costa Rica in double-quick time. In truth Spain should have won by many more -- Jennifer Hermoso fluffed a first-hal

[ad_1] MILAN: Walter Mazzarri made a winning return as Napoli coach on Saturday with the champions' hard-fought 2-1 victory at Atalanta, while AC Milan held on to third in Serie A after beating Fiorentina 1-0. Eljif Elmas netted the decisive goal 11 minutes from the end at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's headed opener for the away side on the stroke of half-time was levelled by a similar strike from Ademola Lookman. North Macedonia midfielder Elmas rolled home the winner from substitute Victor Osimhen's pass following Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi's poor clearance, making sure that Napoli stayed fourth. Mazzarri's team are still seven points behind leaders Inter Milan who travel to Turin on Sunday for the weekend's big match at second-placed Juventus. "The team dominated all last season, playing some of the best football in Europe with players who were not used to being in that position," Mazzarri told D

Wimbledon likely to scrap Russia ban | The Express Tribune

Image
[ad_1] LONDON: British tennis chiefs are set to abandon their controversial ban on Russian and Belarusian players ahead of this year's Wimbledon championships, it was reported Friday. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, the UK's governing Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) came under pressure from the British government to impose a ban. Russian and Belarusian players were eventually barred from all five ATP tournaments staged by the LTA, including the longstanding Queen's Club event in London. The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), which runs Wimbledon, imposed a similar suspension. But Britain's Daily Telegraph reported Friday: "All expectations suggest that the AELTC will lower the ban on Russians and Belarusians". However, it added players from those countries may need to sign a declaration promising they will not "promote or glorify" Russia president Vladimir Putin's war in any way during the tournament. [ad_1] Pakistan's cricket team director Mickey Arthur speaks to journalists in Ahmedabad, India, on October 14, 2023. — Reporter/Faizan Lakhani Pakistan team director Mickey Arthur sought "divine help" on Monday as the Green Shirts face an uphill task to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals. Pakistan have recorded back-to-back wins over Bangladesh and New Zealand to reignite their campaign with Zaman returning from a knee injury to hit 81 and then a blistering 81-ball 126 not out against the Kiwis. With eight points from as many games, Pakistan not only need to beat England in their last game in Kolkata on Saturday but also hope New Zealand lose to Sri Lanka in Bengaluru two days earlier or that the match is washed out. Afghanistan can also edge out Pakistan depending on results in their two last matches. “Who knows how we are going to go in this competition,” said Arthur, who is in his second stint in charge of Pakistan after a spell between 2016-2019. “I have a

[ad_1] LOS ANGELES: Phil Mickelson says he will be "at peace" if he never plays in a PGA Tour event or Ryder Cup again, nearly one year after his explosive remarks about the Saudi-funded LIV golf series triggered uproar. In an interview with Sports Illustrated published on Monday, the six-time major winner said he was not bothered about the possibility of being frozen out of PGA Tour events for good. Mickelson was suspended by the PGA Tour last year after being one of the earliest big names to defect to the controversial LIV circuit. The 52-year-old embraced LIV despite telling a US journalist that the circuit's Saudi backers were "scary" with a "horrible" human rights record. Mickelson said in June last year he hoped to play on the PGA Tour again. However in his remarks to Sports Illustrated, the veteran said he was now indifferent to playing on the circuit again. "If I were never to play another PGA Tour event, I'm totally at

‘US will fight for top spot’ | The Express Tribune

[ad_1] WELLINGTON: Alex Morgan said Thursday that the United States will not be content to merely qualify for the Women's World Cup last 16 and will instead do everything to win their group. The holders battled back to draw 1-1 with the Netherlands in Wellington after skipper Lindsey Horan cancelled out a first-half strike by Jill Roord. The stalemate left both teams locked on four points and neither is yet assured of a berth in the knockout phase heading into their final group games on Tuesday, when the US face Portugal and the Dutch play Vietnam. The United States however have a superior goal difference after beating Vietnam 3-0 in their opener while the Dutch defeated Portugal 1-0. "This next game is going to be extremely important," said Morgan , already a two-times World Cup winner with her country and chasing a historic third title in a row. "Goal differential is a huge factor in terms of first place in the group. "Now we have to work even h

[ad_1] LONDON: A new chapter in the celebrated rivalry between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will unfurl on Thursday when they meet in an exhibition match as the Portugal forward gears up for his first game in Saudi Arabia since joining Al Nassr. After a glittering career in Europe that saw him win four Champions League titles with Real Madrid and two Scudettos at Juventus, Ronaldo signed for Al Nassr, describing it as the "right moment" to share his experience in Asia. The Saudi club is the latest stop in Ronaldo's career that began in 2002 at Sporting CP before the forward spent two spells at Manchester United, the last of which ended on a bitter note as he exited following his acrimonious split with the club. Ronaldo and Messi, who have dominated football's debate about the greatest of all time (GOAT) for the best part of 10 years, will face off on the pitch on Thursday for the first time since December 2020 when Juventus beat Barcelona 3-0. In a statement obtained by ESPN and Fox Sports, Reyna stated: “I told Earnie that I thought it was especially unfair that Gio, who had apologized for acting immaturely about his playing time, was still being dragged through the mud when Gregg had asked for and received forgiveness for doing something so much worse at the same age.” Reyna was referring to her son Gio’s recent spat with Berhalter. [ad_1] PARIS: In 500 days on Tuesday, the 2024 Summer Olympics will burst into life in Paris as the teams float down the River Seine on barges in a unique opening ceremony. The Paris Olympics and Paralympics have a lot riding on them – they involve the return of full crowds of spectators to the world's greatest sporting spectacle after the Covid-blighted Summer Games in Tokyo in 2021 and the Winter Olympics in Beijing last year. On top of that, the spending on the Games is being scrutinised as never before – venues are focused on Seine-Saint-Denis, the poorest area in France. And the buildup is being buffeted by the war in Ukraine and its ramifications for competitors from that country, Russia and its ally Belarus. Here are the key issues to be resolved before the Games open on July 26, 2024: The International Olympic Committee's suggestion that it wants to find a "pathway" for athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus to take part as neutrals in Paris m

Jurors at Chester Crown Court in northwest England could not reach verdicts on two other allegations against Mendy -- one of attempted rape and another of rape -- and were discharged. Prosecutors said they will seek a retrial on the counts the jury could not reach verdicts on at the end of a monthslong trial. Mendy, 28, covered his face with both hands and was gently rocking back and forth as the jury foreman delivered the verdicts in a hushed courtroom, Britain's Press Association reported. The not guilty verdicts related to four young women or teenagers. The unanimous verdicts were delivered on Wednesday by the seven men and four women on the jury. One juror had been discharged earlier for medical reasons. The verdicts could no
