High BMI A Poor Indicator Of Death Risk Among Obese People: Study

Image
[ad_1] Body mass index (BMI) may not increase mortality independently of other risk factors in adults, according to a new study that stressed the need for incorporating other factors. The prevalence of overweight and obesity has risen dramatically over the last 25 years, and it is well-established that elevated BMI can contribute to several cardio-metabolic conditions. However, studies that have analysed the association between BMI and all-cause mortality have been inconsistent. To understand, a team from Rutgers University in the US retrospectively studied data on 554,332 US adults. Of these, about 35 per cent had a BMI between 25 and 30, which is typically defined as overweight, and 27.2 per cent had a BMI above or equal to 30, typically defined as obese. Over a median follow-up of nine years and a maximum follow-up of 20 years, the researchers observed 75,807 deaths. The risk of all-cause mortality was similar across a wide range of BMI categories. For older adults, there w...

People live longer if they workout in the afternoon, claims study - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] People who can’t wake up early but work out during lunch hour can celebrate! A new study says that your mid-afternoon exercises may cut the chances of early death more than morning or nighttime workouts. The research, released on February 18 in Nature Communications, examined 92,000 individuals and their demographic and health information from a UK biomedical database. Accelerometers recorded the participants for seven days and tracked when and how hard they worked out. Over several years, researchers examined mortality statistics and discovered that over 3,000 (or 3%) of the participants had passed away, with approximately 1,000 succumbing to heart disease and 1,800 to cancer. Compared to individuals who exercise in the evening and morning, people who worked out in the mid-afternoon had a lower risk of early death, both from heart disease and generally. The results remained the same for those who frequently changed the timings of their workout routine and had "mixed...

Covid vaccines did not increase sudden death risk among young Indian adults: ICMR study | India News - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] NEW DELHI: Vaccines administered for COVID-19 did not increase the risk of sudden death among young adults in India but it was the post-Covid hospitalisation, family history of sudden death, and certain lifestyle behaviours that are likely the underlying causes, according to a peer-reviewed ICMR study. The study by Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR) was conducted through the participation of 47 tertiary care hospitals across India.Cases were apparently healthy individuals aged 18-45 years without any known co-morbidity, who suddenly died of unexplained causes during October 2021-March 2023. Interviews were recorded to collect data on COVID-19 vaccination, infection and post-COVID-19 conditions, family history of sudden death, smoking, recreational drug use, alcohol frequency and binge drinking and vigorous-intensity physical activity two days before death. Uncovering The Risk Of Early Death From Bipolar Disorder

Image
[ad_1] People with bipolar disorder characterised by extreme mood swings are six times more likely to die before their time from external causes, such as accidents, violence, and suicide, than those without the condition, finds research.  The study, published in the open-access journal BMJ Mental Health, showed that people without the disorder are twice as likely to die from somatic (physical) causes, with alcohol a major contributing factor, the findings show. "A balanced consideration between therapeutic response, potential serious long-term somatic side effects of different medicines, and risk of cause-specific premature mortality is needed, especially in younger persons," said researchers including Dr Tapio Paljarvi, Niuvanniemi Hospital in Finland. cre Trending Stories "Targeting preventive interventions for substance abuse will likely reduce the mortality gap both due to external causes and somatic causes.
