[ad_1] NEW YORK: US health officials say 93 Americans have died after cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic since 2009, with many of the recent deaths involving a procedure known as a Brazilian butt lift. The operation has grown in popularity recently and has led to deaths in other countries as well, including the US A report issued Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could not say how common these deaths are or whether they are more common in the Dominican Republic. The report suggests steps that medical tourists should consider before traveling to get work done. "Be informed about who is doing your surgery, the qualifications of the person doing your surgery, and whether or not the facility is capable of doing the surgery and whether it is capable of providing adequate post-operative care - which is crucial," said Dr. Matthew Hudson , the study's first author. A Brazilian butt lift involves injecting fat. The report included de...

Watch live: State of Emergency in effect as storm brings flooding, damage to New York City and beyond

Image
[ad_1] NEW YORK - New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency across New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley as Friday's strong storm caused flooding and damage across the area.  New York City  Mayor Eric Adams  asked for city residents to shelter in place temporarily during the worst of the storm.  Hochul called the flooding levels "historic," saying New York could set a new single day record.  Significant flooding was reported throughout the five boroughs and beyond. At Prospect Park, the lake overflowed and created a miniature river, with water gushing steadily into the street.  Some cars were almost totally submerged in Park Slope.   I am declaring a State of Emergency across New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley due to the extreme rainfall we’re seeing throughout the region. Please take steps to stay safe and remember to never attempt to travel on flooded roads. — Governor Kath...

Agco CEO says food inflation is here to stay, even if the war in Ukraine ends tomorrow

Image
[ad_1] CEO Eric Hansotia of agriculture-machinery manufacturer Agco told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday that elevated grain prices — and the high cost of food — will persist, even if Russia's invasion of Ukraine ended tomorrow. Both Russia and Ukraine serve as major global grain suppliers, with the latter often referred to as the "breadbasket of Europe," and so when the war broke out in February 2022 it sent the world's food supply chain into turmoil . When Hansotia sat down with "Mad Money" last March , he told Cramer "13% of the global calories came out of production" when Russian and Ukraine borders shut down. Coupled with climate issues — namely droughts across Europe and North America — the food supply chain disaster spurred by the Russia's invasion is not likely to fade anytime soon, according to Hansotia. "Even if [the war] were to end tomorrow, there's a long-standing degradation in the ability for that area to grow cro...

Body camera video shows rescue of woman chained in Louisville home

Image
[ad_1] Police body camera video released Tuesday show the rescue of a woman who was found chained to the floor of a Louisville, Kentucky, home last week. The video shows a Louisville police officer trying to enter the home around 7 p.m. Wednesday after a neighbor reported hearing screaming, police said. The officer eventually uses a ladder to reach the second floor, where the window had been broken out, the video shows. A Louisville police officer points to a window where he and other officers later found a woman in distress on Aug. 16. LMPD Inside was a crying woman with a chain around her neck and a padlock, and the chain was attached to the floor. Moises May, 36, was arrested two days later and police said in a statement he was alleged to have kidnapped the woman a few days prior. Online court records showed a next court date for Aug. 28. It was not clear from online records if May had an attorney who could speak on his behalf. May was arrested on one count of kidnapping, intim...

Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images Stocks traded higher Tuesday, as Wall Street tried to close out a dismal month of trading — that saw Treasury yields surge to levels not seen in more than 16 years — on a high note. The broader index rose 0.4%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 59 points, or 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.3%. The S&P 500 advance was held in check mainly by communication services stocks, which was one of just two sectors trading in negative territory in afternoon trading. Notably, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Netflix shares were all lower. Nvidia was down by more than 1%. The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) dropped to an 18 handle, below the long-term average of roughly 20. A higher VIX level can point to greater uncertainty in markets. Earnings season continued Tuesday. Caterpillar slid more than 6% after the construction equipment maker said its fourth-...

Endangered red wolf can make it in the wild, but not without 'significant' help, study says - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] WAKE FOREST: The endangered red wolf can survive in the wild, but only with "significant additional management intervention," according to a long-awaited population viability analysis released Friday. The US Fish and Wildlife Service also released an updated recovery plan Friday for " Canis rufus " - the only wolf species unique to the United States. It calls for spending nearly $328 million over the next 50 years to get the red wolf off the endangered species list. "This final revised recovery plan will help the conservation and survival of the Red Wolf, ensuring these endangered canids endure in the wild for future generations," Interior Department Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks Shannon Estenoz said in a news release. But the announcement comes with a lot of caveats. The viability analysis says it will take drastic reductions in gunshot and vehicle deaths, stepped-up efforts to prevent wolf-coyote mixing, and creat...

Anna Moneymaker | Getty Images Results were good, but not good enough. That's Wall Street's reaction to quarterly results on Tuesday from Alphabet and Microsoft . Both companies reported revenue and earnings that exceeded estimates, yet the stocks sold off in extended trading. In investor speak, the stocks were priced for perfection. Alphabet shares are up 56% for the year and climbed to a fresh high last week, exceeding the prior record from late 2021, the peak of the tech boom. Microsoft is up 70% over the past 12 months, also reaching a fresh high recently and surpassing Apple as the most valuable publicly traded company. The companies generated excitement last year by riding the artificial intelligence wave, and were also lauded by shareholders for their dramatic cost-cutting efforts, which included ...
