Why the U.S. government may try to break up Amazon

Image
[ad_1] A showdown between Amazon and government regulators over whether it is overly dominant may soon be coming to a head, with the Federal Trade Commission preparing to sue — and possibly break up — the world's largest e-commerce company, according to  Politico  and  Bloomberg .  The retailer, which also operates an advertising agency , shipping network, supermarket chain and movie studio , has become a mainstay in Americans' lives. But its explosive growth, which has made founder Jeff Bezos one of the world's  richest people , has also long spurred calls for the company to be reined in, with consumer activists claiming that the behemoth uses monopolistic practices to preserve its stronghold.  For FTC Chair Lina Khan — who first came to prominence while still in law school by writing a  paper  arguing that Amazon is a monopoly — an effort to fracture the company would amount to a career-defining throw of the dice. Of late, meanwhile, the FTC has lost battles to blo

Spain's high court suspends $209 million fines on Apple, Amazon amid appeal - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] MADRID : Spain's high court suspended 194 million euros ($209 million) in fines imposed on Amazon and Apple by the local antitrust watchdog in July, pending an appeal by the tech giants, an Amazon spokesperson said on Thursday. CNMC , as the watchdog is known, fined Amazon and Apple for colluding to prevent dealers other than Amazon from selling Apple wares on Amazon's websites in Spain. Apple was fined 143.6 million euros and Amazon 50.5 million euros and both companies at the time said they would appeal. The court decision to suspend the payment is part of the appeal process, the Amazon spokesperson said. Amazon said in July that as a result of the deal with Apple, the number of discounts on Apple devices on Amazon's websites increased. The suspension of the fine does not anticipate the court will rule in favour or against the tech giants. An Apple spokesperson did not immediately responded to request for comment. CNMC said a contract signed by the tw

What shows are affected by the TV writers' strike?

Image
[ad_1] The first TV and film writers' strike in 15 years kicked off Tuesday, and it's expected to bring production in the nation's entertainment center to a halt.  The impact of the strike could be far-reaching, depending on how long it takes for writers and studios to reach a deal. The last Hollywood strike, in 2007-2008, took three months to resolve. With the 11,500 members of the Writers' Guild of America working across film, TV, streaming and fiction podcasts, here's how the labor stoppage is expected to affect shows. What shows are affected? The most immediate impact of the strike will be seen in late-night shows, which are written daily to pivot off current events. "The Late Show" on CBS, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on ABC, "The Tonight Show" on NBC, "Late Night" on NBC and Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," have stopped production and plan to run repeats for t

Germany pledges $222 million for Brazil environment, Amazon - Times of India

[ad_1] SAO PAULO: German development minister Svenja Schulze announced Monday that her government will make 204 million euros ($222 million) available for environmental policies in Brazil. Of this total, $38 million is a donation to the Amazon Fund, Schulze told reporters in capital Brasilia. It is the most important international cooperation effort to preserve the Amazon rainforest, and is mostly funded by Norway. In 2019, former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who considered the Amazon an internal affair, dissolved the steering committee that selects sustainable projects to finance. In reaction, Germany and Norway froze their donations. “With the new government and the team of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and (environment) minister Marina Silva , we have a great chance to protect the forest and to offer a new perspective to the people who live there,” Schulze said. Under Bolsonaro, deforestation in Brazil's Amazon reached a 15-year high as he dismantled enviro
