Image
[ad_1] CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Dueling political factions took to the streets of Venezuela 's capital on Tuesday for the first competing rallies of the presidential election year, showcasing their ability to draw people en masse, as voters grapple with political disappointments and uncertainty over the candidate who ultimately will challenge President Nicolás Maduro. Supporters of Maduro’s ruling party and opposition leader María Corina Machado demonstrated in Caracas a day after Venezuela ’s top prosecutor announced the detention of more than 30 people and arrest warrants for a dozen others who allegedly plotted efforts to destabilize the South American country’s government. [ad_1] Comment on this story Comment POIPET, Cambodia — A massive fire at a Cambodian hotel casino Thursday injured over 60 people and killed at least 19 — a number that officials warned would rise after the search for bodies resumes Friday. The blaze, which started around midnight Wednesday, was put out over 12 hours later at 2 p.m. Thursday, said Sek Sokhom, head of Banteay Meanchey province’s information department. He said more than 60 people were injured and the death toll was expected to rise once rescuers are able to access victims who were believed to still be under debris or in locked rooms. Videos posted on social media showed people falling from a roof after they were trapped by the fire at the Grand Diamond City casino and hotel in the town of Poipet. In a video posted by Cambodia’s firefighting agency, a crowd could be heard shouting pleas to rescue people trapped on the roof of the hotel complex, which is more than a dozen stories tall at its highest point. Putin’s ‘greatest hits’: Russian dissidents continue disappearing in pattern of bizarre deaths

Image
[ad_1] Russian President Vladimir Putin’s opponents continue to disappear in a pattern of strange and sudden deaths, and his greatest domestic opponent, Alexei Navalny, died after a sudden collapse , according to Russian authorities.        "Generally, as a culture, the Russians don’t believe in coincidences. But, in this particular case, there’s a reason why, although we are unlikely to determine conclusively exactly how Navalny died, many analysts agree that Russian intelligence services are likely behind his death," Rebekah Koffler, a strategic military intelligence analyst and the author of "Putin's Playbook," told Fox News Digital.  "There’s a specific intelligence tradecraft that dates back to 1920 that the Soviets used to eliminate the so-called enemies of the state, " Koffler said. "The Soviets and now the Russians are also masters of covering their tracks and making the assassination look like it’s a natural or accidental death. &qu

Mexican families get quick reunions with migrant relatives

Image
[ad_1] Comment on this story Comment CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — Tears flowed amid heartfelt embraces as Mexican families were allowed brief reunions at the border Saturday with relatives who migrated to the United States. As a mariachi band played the popular song “Las Mañanitas,” about 150 families passed over the Rio Grande to meet with loved ones they had not seen for years. Margarita Piña could not hide her emotion as she waited to greet her son, whom she hadn’t seen since he left home two years ago in the middle of the pandemic to seek a better future in the U.S. “It’s very hard because we don’t know what they’re suffering over there,” Piña said. Knowing their meeting would be limited to only five minutes, Piña said she would take advantage of the limited time to tell him “that we still love you very much.” It was the 10th edition of the “Hugs, not walls” event, which was organized by humanitarian groups near the Casa de Adobe Museum in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, which s

Biden admin denies 'interim' Iran deal, but new report suggests continued diplomatic backdoor dealings

Image
[ad_1] The Biden administration has denied that an "interim" Iran nuclear deal is on the table, but a think tank report outlines a number of indications that diplomatic discussions may have continued, potentially with incoming concessions.  "Despite a variety of statements by the administration since last fall alleging that the Iran nuclear deal was on the back burner, it appears the administration had merely been seeking a back-door to negotiate with the Islamic Republic this whole time," Behnam Ben Taleblu, Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), told Fox News Digital.  Negotiations over reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) , also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal, hit a snag in late 2022 as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken admitted that talks had gone "backwards" with Iran, who continued to add "extraneous demands, demands unrelated to the JCPOA itself."  The administration continued to say

European Union member states weaken proposal to lower vehicle emissions

Image
[ad_1] European Union member countries have watered down a proposal by the bloc's executive arm aimed at lowering vehicle emissions. The European Commission had proposed last year updated pollution standards for new combustion engine vehicles that are expected to remain on European roads well after the 27-nation bloc bans their sale in 2035, with the aim of lowering emissions from tailpipes, brakes and tires. The Commission hoped that new guidelines would help lower nitrogen oxide emissions from cars and vans by 35% compared to existing exhaust emission regulations for pollutants other than carbon dioxide, and by 56% from buses and trucks. But several member states and automakers pushed for a weaker legislation and agreed Monday on a diluted compromise put forward by the rotating presidency of the EU currently held by Spain. Member states instead decided to keep existing emissions limits and test conditions for cars and vans, and to lower them only for buses and heavy commer

Minnesota families of men killed by police file lawsuit to access investigation files

Image
[ad_1] The families of five Minnesota men who were killed by police officers announced a lawsuit Thursday to force the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to release its investigative files on their deaths, saying the state agency has failed to comply with Minnesota's open records law. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Ramsey County District Court in St. Paul, says once the investigation into a deadly force incident is completed and a prosecutor decides not to charge the officers, the data legally should be turned over to the families of the deceased within 10 days of them requesting it. Prosecutors in all five cases cleared the officers of wrongdoing. But the lawsuit says the BCA still hasn't met its legal obligations to the families. An agency spokesperson said the BCA releases information to families as quickly as it can. [ad_1] Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi says Israel’s shameless move to force the people of Gaza to flee their homes runs counter to all international laws and humanitarian principles. Addressing a cabinet session on Sunday evening, Raeisi strongly condemned the silence of certain countries and international organizations in the face of Israel’s unprecedented and heinous crimes against the oppressed and defenseless people of Palestine Those who keep silent in the face of Israel’s crimes must be held accountable for their actions and face the judgment of history, he added.
