As monarch, the 73-year-old grandfather of five serves as the king of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth sovereign states.   He is also believed to be a skilled watercolour painter and has interests in traditional countryside practices such as hedge laying. His mother made him Prince of Wales in 1958 at the age of nine, but his investiture was not until 11 years later. The improbable U.S. plan to revitalize a Palestinian security force

Image
[ad_1] The Palestinian Authority security forces, which report to President Mahmoud Abbas, are at a pivotal moment. The group, estimated to be 35,500 members strong, is regarded by the Biden administration as central to its goal to stabilize a post-war Gaza. However, despite two decades of reforms, the Palestinian Authority remains chronically underfunded and widely unpopular; many think its security force is ill-equipped to take on the massive responsibility that its Western backers are envisioning. Today, Post reporter Miriam Berger takes us inside the Palestinian Authority training center , and gives us a rare glimpse of the specific challenges this security force faces as the United States rests its hopes on the group. Today’s show was produced by Rennie Svirnovskiy, with help from Ariel Plotnick. It was mixed by Sean Carter and edited by Monica Campbell.  Subscribe to The Washington Post here . Mexico searches for 3 missing US sailors with plane, ships

Image
[ad_1] MEXICO CITY — The Mexican Navy said Monday it is using ships and a plane to search for three Americans who went missing along with their sailboat off Mexico’s northern Pacific coast. The Navy said it is using four patrol boats and a twin-engine prop airplane to search the area, but apparently no sign of the missing people has turned up yet. The three Americans were aboard the 44-foot (13.5 meter) sailing vessel “Ocean Bound.” The U.S. Coast Guard gave their names as Kerry O’Brien, Frank O’Brien, and William Gross. They have not been heard from since April 4, when they were near the Pacific coast port of Mazatlán, Mexico. The three had planned to stop for supplies in the Baja resort town of Cabo San Lucas, before proceeding to San Diego. However, the Coast Guard said marinas in Baja California have not reported seeing the vessel. Palestinian government resigns in step toward post-Gaza war overhaul

Image
[ad_1] JERUSALEM — The Palestinian Authority’s prime minister presented the resignation of the entire government on Monday, opening the way for a revitalized administration that the United States and its allies envision taking on an expanded role in postwar Gaza. The United States and several Arab countries have been pushing a plan — openly opposed by the Israeli government — that would see Gaza eventually administered by the Palestinian Authority, which has long been marred by dysfunction and is hugely unpopular among Palestinians. Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said in a news conference Monday that he had tendered the government’s resignation to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas because of the “significant political, security and economic developments” stemming from Israel’s war in Gaza alongside increased violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Abbas accepted the resignation, but asked the government to remain in a caretaker capacity until a new one is formed, a...

Mexico's president asks residents to reject drug gang gifts

Image
[ad_1] Comment on this story Comment MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s president appealed to the country’s citizens Tuesday not to accept holiday handouts and gifts from drug gangs, after videos posted online showed garish pickup trucks handing out loads of gifts while bystanders described the drivers as members of the Jalisco drug cartel. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed that some drug gangs were looking to resume such giveaways — often seen years ago — to gain the support of the local population. López Obrador said in his morning press briefing that local residents in some communities have tried to protect traffickers, stop drug seizures or oppose the installation of National Guard bases intended to fight drug trafficking. Authorities have not confirmed the source of the gifts — mostly toys — in the Dec. 21 handout in a low-income neighborhood in the city of Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state. Mother, child hid behind stroller during deadly subway chokehold: court papers

Image
[ad_1] FIRST ON FOX: A mother and son hid behind a stroller and a high school student prayed as Jordan Neely yelled "someone is going to die today" before he was placed in a fatal chokehold inside a packed NYC subway train, new court papers revealed. A woman described the erratic homeless man's demeanor on May 1 as "sickening" and "satanic." She allegedly said she believed she "was going to die" as Neely approached her and called the confrontation "absolutely traumatizing." The details were disclosed publicly for the first time in a motion to dismiss the charges against Marine veteran Daniel Penny, who's accused of choking Neely to death in an effort to protect other passengers. The court papers cite testimony from more than a dozen witnesses who were called by prosecutors to testify before the grand jury that indicted Penny, 24, on one count each of second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. Ukraine live briefing: ‘Let him go,’ Biden says of U.S. reporter detained in Russia

Image
[ad_1] The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board called on the Biden administration to expel Russia’s ambassador in Washington and Russian journalists in the United States after Moscow detained Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich . The board accused Russia of taking the U.S. citizen hostage on bogus espionage charges. The White House has said the State Department has been in “direct touch with the Russian government” and is “actively working to secure consular access” to the 31-year-old journalist. “Let him go,” Biden told reporters outside the White House on Friday, directing the remark at Russia. In response to a question about the call to expel Russian diplomats, he said, “That’s not the plan right now.” Leading media and human rights organizations have said Gershkovich’s detention is unwarranted and unjust and called for his release . In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky marked the anniversary of the recapture of Bucha, the town in the Kyiv suburbs where Russian forces ar...

Alex Murdaugh murder trial: Experts weigh impact of bomb threat on jury

Image
[ad_1] WALTERBORO, S.C. – South Carolina  attorney Justin Bamberg said the bomb threat called into the Colleton County Courthouse Wednesday could derail Alex Murdaugh's murder trial. "The biggest question is what impact would something like this have on the jury — even when there’s no reason for the jurors to be scared," Bamberg, of Bamberg Legal, told Fox News Digital. It's possible that some members of the panel of four men and eight women were so rattled by the bomb threat they will try to get off the jury, he added. The trial was interrupted Wednesday at about 12:30 p.m. when a call came into the court's general sessions phone line.  ALEX MURDAUGH: TIMELINE OF THE ONCE POWERFUL SOUTH CAROLINA LAWYER'S SPECTACULAR DOWNFALL Justin Bamberg stands outside the Colleton County Courthouse in Walterboro, S.C., Feb. 2, 2023. No country can afford to exclude half of its population: UN aid chief. Four major global groups suspend operations, unable to run programs without female staff. UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations said on Wednesday that some "time-critical" programmes in Afghanistan have temporarily stopped and warned many other activities will also likely need to be paused because of a ban by the Taliban-led administration on women aid workers. UN aid chief Martin Griffiths, the heads of UN agencies and several aid groups said in a joint statement that women's "participation in aid delivery is not negotiable and must continue," calling on the authorities to reverse the decision. "Banning women from humanitarian work has immediate life-threatening consequences for all Afghans. Already, some time-critical prog...
