Another atmospheric river takes aim at California as the state grapples with snow shutdowns and risk for flooding grows

Image
[ad_1] California was plagued by a devastating drought for months. Now, after a series of atmospheric rivers and winter storms, the state is being thrashed by significant amounts of snow and rain.  And it's about to get more intense.  Back-to-back winter storms have left many areas throughout the state almost totally buried in snow, forcing many residents to go on arduous hikes to secure basic needs , leaving avid hikers stranded and even shutting down Yosemite National Park. The Weather Channel reports that a storm system will continue to dump more snow through Wednesday before an  atmospheric river merges into the region on Thursday. "[The winter storm] will also get extra fuel by tapping into a long plume of deep moisture known as an atmospheric river," The Weather Channel said. "In this case, the ribbon of moisture will stretch over 2,000 miles long, from near Hawaii, what meteorologists often call the '...

IRS tells millions of Americans in more than 20 states to hold off on filing their taxes

Image
[ad_1] The IRS is asking millions of taxpayers more than 20 states including California, Colorado and Florida who received tax rebates last year to hold off on filing their taxes.  The reason: The agency said it is seeking to clarify whether those tax rebates and special refunds are considered taxable income. "We expect to provide additional clarity for as many states and taxpayers as possible next week," the IRS said on February 3.  On Friday, the IRS provided guidance to those taxpayers: For the most part, those rebates aren't taxable.  "During a review, the IRS determined it will not challenge the taxability of payments related to general welfare and disaster relief," the tax agency said in its February 10 update . About 16 million California residents received " middle-class tax refund " checks of $350 per eligible taxpayer last year, part of a relief package designed by the state to help residents...

California to fill 100% of water requests from cities and farms after wet winter

Image
[ad_1] After historic levels of rain and snow this winter season, California expects to fill 100% of water requests from cities and farms for the first time since 2006, the state Department of Water Resources announced Thursday. Because the state's reservoirs have nearly reached capacity, and the snowpack is beginning to melt, any contractor who needs water, and has the ability to store it, can have it, the department said. "Water supply conditions and careful management of reservoir operations during this extreme winter allows DWR to maximize water deliveries while enhancing protections for the environment," said DWR Director Karla Nemeth. "DWR is moving and storing as much water as possible to the benefit of communities, agriculture, and the environment." The water supply will be delivered through the State Water Project's 29 agencies, which serve 27 million Californians and 750,000 acres of farmland. The...

California lawmakers approve nation's first penalty for gas price gouging

Image
[ad_1] California lawmakers on Monday approved the nation's first penalty for gas price gouging, voting to give regulators the power to punish oil companies for profiting from the type of price spikes that hit Californians last summer. The Democrats in charge of the state Legislature worked quickly to pass the bill on Monday, just one week after it was introduced. It was an unusually fast process for a controversial issue, especially one opposed by the powerful oil industry, which has spent millions of dollars to stop it. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom used his political muscle to pass the bill, calling for a special legislative session last December to pass a new tax on oil company profits after the average price of gas in California hit a record high of $6.44 per gallon, according to AAA. Taking on the oil industry has been a major policy priority for Newsom, who is viewed as a potential future presidential candidate. He is expecte...

Gareth Bale stuns pro golfers with incredible cart path shot at Pebble Beach Pro-Am | CNN

Image
[ad_1] CNN  —  Few tuning in to watch the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Thursday will have been surprised to learn that former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale is good at golf. After all, the Welshman made no secret of his love for the game throughout a glittering soccer career that he called time on in January. Yet, just how natural the former Tottenham Hotspur and Real forward looks on the fairways has taken many aback after an impressive first round showing on his PGA Tour debut in California. Playing alongside professional partner Joseph Bramlett, Bale carded a seven-under 65 on the notoriously challenging Spyglass Hill course to finish the day five shots behind the Pro-Am’s leading duo, the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes’ owner Tom Dundon and American pro golfer Will Gordon. As a five-time Champions League winner and one of the most decorated players of his generat...

Image
[ad_1] A North Hollywood strip club has become the only unionized adult joint in the nation after a prolonged battle between the dancers and management. Dancers at Star Garden Topless Dive Bar voted unanimously to unionize with the Actors' Equity Association, with 17 votes in favor, according to a ballot count held by the National Labor Relations Board Thursday afternoon. The vote was emotional, with observers in the room and on Zoom crying and cheering after the votes were counted. "The NLRB just counted our votes and it's official!! We are UNIONIZED!! We did it!!" the dancers said via a Twitter account. The NLRB just counted our votes and it’s official!! We are UNIONIZED!! Bank stocks tumble as First Republic deal fails to stem contagion fears

Image
[ad_1] JPMorgan Chase's move to acquire most of First Republic Bank's assets  this week hasn't stemmed investor concerns about the financial prospects for other regional lenders. The stock prices of Comerica, PacWest Bancorp, Western Alliance Bank and Zions Bank shares fell sharply Tuesday as attention shifted to other financial players that could be at risk of the startling bank runs that have taken down First Republic, Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in recent weeks.  "Wall Street is quickly hitting the sell button as banking turmoil appears it is not going away anytime soon and is ready to focus on the next weakest link — potentially distressed lenders with tremendous exposure to commercial real estate," Edward Moya, a senior market analyst at Oanda, said in a research note. Shares of Los Angeles-based PacWest, with $44 billon in assets, plunged 28%, while $65 billion Western Alliance tumbled 15%. The KBW...

Research shows emotions stirred by music create powerful memories - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] CALIFORNIA : Time is a continuous stream, yet our memories are separated into distinct episodes, each of which becomes part of our particular narrative. The role of emotions in memory formation is a puzzle that science has only lately begun to explore. UCLA scientists have shown that the shifting emotions evoked by music aid in the formation of distinct and long-lasting memories. Music was used to affect the emotions of volunteers executing simple computer tasks in the study, which was published in Nature Communications. The researchers discovered that the dynamics of people's emotions transformed normally innocuous experiences into memorable ones. "Changes in emotion evoked by music created boundaries between episodes that made it easier for people to remember what they had seen and when they had seen it," said lead author Mason McClay, a doctoral student in psychology at UCLA. "We think this finding has great therapeutic promise for helping people w...

"Grey's Anatomy" star Caterina Scorsone reveals she rescued her children from a house fire

Image
[ad_1] "Grey's Anatomy" star Caterina Scorsone revealed in a social media post Monday that she saved her three children from a house fire "a couple of months ago," escaping her burning Southern California residence in about two minutes. "While getting my kids ready for bed and finishing bath time, smoke began to seep up through the grout around the tub," Scorsone wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of the fire damage in her home. "When I looked down the hallway a river of thick black smoke had already formed and was filling the house." Scorsone did not provide details on the exact date and location of the fire, or whether authorities had established a cause.  Best known for playing Dr. Amelia Shepherd on the medical series, Scorsone emphasized how quickly the blaze spread, and disclosed that four pets died in the fire.  "I had about two minutes to get my th...

What happens to First Republic Bank's stock and deposits now?

Image
[ad_1] First Republic Bank was teetering for weeks before it was seized  early Monday by regulators, who then accepted a bid from banking giant JPMorgan Chase to acquire almost all of its assets.  That move is leading to a host of questions about what happens next, such as the sale's impact on depositors and shareholders.  Here's what to know about the bank's collapse. Why did First Republic Bank collapse? The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation took over First Republic early Monday because the regulator had determined that the bank was conducting its business in an "unsound manner." The California regulator then appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as the bank's receiver. The collapse follows the March seizure by regulators of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, both of which had experienced bank runs.  Like Silicon Valley Bank, a significant share of...
