Scientists map human, primate brains at cellular and genetic levels - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] NEW DELHI: Scientists forming an international collaboration have mapped the genetic, cellular, and structural makeup of the human brain and the nonhuman primate brain . Along with new knowledge about the brain cells , they share new insights about our nervous systems' cellular makeup across many regions of the brain and what makes the human brain distinctive. Hundreds of scientists from around the world worked together to complete a range of studies to demonstrate how a suite of scalable techniques can be used to study the detailed organisation of the human brain at unprecedented resolution. The detailed mapping of the brain allows for a deeper knowledge of its function and dysfunction at the cellular level, helping pave the way for a new generation of precision therapeutics for people with mental disorders and other illnesses of the brain, the researchers said. Their findings appear in more than 20 papers published across the journals Science, Science Advances and ...

The Power Of Breathing: How It Can Help Reduce Alzheimer's Risk, Reveals Study

Image
[ad_1] Researchers from the University of Southern California showed that a brief breathing session -- inhaling for a count of five, then exhaling for a count of five for 20 minutes twice a day for four weeks can have significant impacts. Volunteers` heart rate variability increased during each exercise period and the levels of amyloid-beta peptides circulating in their blood decreased over the four weeks of the experiment. Accumulation of amyloid beta in the brain due to increased production and/or decreased clearance is believed to trigger the Alzheimer`s disease process. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, maybe the first to discover a way that adults, both young and old, can reduce their amyloid beta levels: via breathing exercises that lower the levels in our blood of these peptides associated with Alzheimer`s disease, the team said. It is because the way we breathe affects our heart rate, which in turn affects our nervous...

How Lack Of Sleep Reduces Cognitive Benefits Of Exercise? Research Reveals

Image
[ad_1] A group of researchers discovered that regular physical exercise may protect against cognitive deterioration as one age, but this protective effect may be diminished in persons who do not get enough sleep. The study conducted by UCL researchers and findings published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity, looked at cognitive function over 10 years in 8,958 people aged 50 and over in England. The study looked at how different combinations of sleep and physical exercise habits affected people's cognitive performance over time.  They discovered that persons who were more physically active yet slept for shorter periods of time - fewer than six hours on average - had quicker cognitive loss overall, implying that their cognitive ability was equal to peers who conducted less physical activity after ten years. cre Trending Stories Lead author Dr Mikaela Bloomberg (UCL Institute of Epidemiology & Health Care) said: "Our study suggests that getting sufficient sleep may ...
