One of the changes the union wants to see is a four-day workweek, working 32 hours for 40 hours of pay. UAW President Shawn Fain gave an address last month on Facebook Live, explaining the demands of the union. "Our members are working 60, 70, even 80 hours a week just to make ends meet. That's not living. It's barely surviving and it needs to stop," he said. After receiving a contract proposal

What shows are affected by the TV writers' strike?

Image
[ad_1] The first TV and film writers' strike in 15 years kicked off Tuesday, and it's expected to bring production in the nation's entertainment center to a halt.  The impact of the strike could be far-reaching, depending on how long it takes for writers and studios to reach a deal. The last Hollywood strike, in 2007-2008, took three months to resolve. With the 11,500 members of the Writers' Guild of America working across film, TV, streaming and fiction podcasts, here's how the labor stoppage is expected to affect shows. What shows are affected? The most immediate impact of the strike will be seen in late-night shows, which are written daily to pivot off current events. "The Late Show" on CBS, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on ABC, "The Tonight Show" on NBC, "Late Night" on NBC and Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," have stopped production and plan to run repeats for t

The action would impact hospitals, clinics and medical offices in California, Colorado, Oregon, Virginia and Washington as well as Washington, D.C

Supreme Court ruling deals another blow to organized labor

Image
[ad_1] The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a concrete company could sue a union after striking employees walked out and left concrete running in trucks, a ruling that labor advocates fear could more broadly weaken worker rights. The 8-1 decision in Glacier Northwest v. International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 174 opens the door for employers to sue workers for damages if they believe that their activism hurt the business. The decision, which comes as strikes across the U.S. are at a  15-year high , could make walking out much riskier for workers, labor activists fear. Under the National Labor Relations Act, workers have a legal right to strike, except in cases that include deliberate property destruction and violence. The 1935 law puts most workplace disputes outside the reach of state courts and under the purview of the National Labor Relations Board. Noel Francisco, the attorney representing Glacier, said the decision "vind

Dealers defer nationwide petrol pumps shutdown for two days - SUCH TV

Image
[ad_1] The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) has deferred strike to shut fuel pumps across the country for two days. The development came after the association members held negotiations with State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik, who arrived in Karachi earlier today (Friday) in a bid to convince the PPDA to call off the nationwide strike. In a statement, the PPDA said they might hold another round of negotiations with the government after two days. A day earlier, the PPDA announced shutting down fuel pumps across the country from July 22, demanding an increase in profit margins amid an inflation crisis. "We will shut down all petrol pumps across Pakistan on July 22, 6pm," said the association, which further says it has more than 10,000 members. In a statement, the association said the petroleum minister was informed about their concerns but to no avail. The official communique said interest rates and inflation have hit operators' businesses

Why the actors and writers strikes are good news for Netflix

Image
[ad_1] Netflix, a major target of the current strikes by  Hollywood writers  and actors, has seen an unexpected cash boost from the two labor unions' actions.  In its quarterly earnings report Wednesday, Netflix said it expects to have at least $5 billion in free cash flow for 2023 because of reduced operational costs as a result of the strikes delaying production schedules. That's a significant increase from its previous estimate of $3.5 billion.  The company plans to use some of the extra cash to buy back stock, it said. "We're currently running a bit above our targeted minimum cash level, so we expect to increase our stock repurchase activity in the second half of 2023, assuming no material change in our business," Netflix said in a letter to investors . The company's chief financial officer, Adam Neumann, detailed some of the reasons for the cash boost on an investor call Wednesday. In addition to "t

Los Angeles investigating after trees used for shade by SAG-AFTRA strikers were trimmed by NBCUniversal

[ad_1] The Los Angeles City Controller's office is investigating after several trees near Universal Studios property were trimmed — trees that were providing shade and relief from the blistering heat for striking members of the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA . The city controller, Kenneth Mejia, announced the office's investigation  Tuesday on Twitter, sharing before and after photos of the trees — the before showing fuller trees with leaves and the after showing the trees' barren limbs. "Our Office is investigating the tree trimming that occurred outside Universal Studios where workers, writers, and actors are exercising their right to picket," Mejia wrote. "The trimmed trees are LA City managed street trees." Members of both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, the union that represents thousands of Hollywood actors, are on strike after the unions and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which rep

[ad_1] As the actors strike scuttles Hollywood productions , as well as events promoting performers' work, one movie premiere went forward as scheduled, albeit without its stars. At Disney's "Haunted Mansion" premiere Saturday, the only recognizable faces on the red carpet were those of Disney characters, not the star-studded film's cast members.  Typically, red carpet events featuring celebrities arriving amid flashing bulbs and screaming fans are a trademark of — and the engine behind — Hollywood premieres. But as roughly 65,000 actors represented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) are now on strike, they are prohibited not only from working on camera but from promoting their work through festivals, premieres or interviews.  SAG-AFTRA announced the work stoppage Friday  after negotiations with studios failed . They join more than 11,000 TV and script writers

Media mogul Barry Diller says Hollywood executives, top actors should take 25% pay cut to end strikes

Image
[ad_1] Washington — Media mogul Barry Diller suggested top Hollywood executives and the highest-paid actors take a 25% pay cut "to try and narrow the difference" between the highest and lowest earners in the industry as TV and movie actors joined screenwriters on strike .  "Everybody's probably overpaid at the top end," Diller, chairman and senior executive of IAC and Expedia, told "Face the Nation" on Sunday.  Diller served as the chairman and CEO of Fox, Inc., in the 1980s as it created the Fox Broadcasting Company and its motion picture operations, another turbulent time in the industry. Prior to Fox, he served 10 years as chairman and chief executive of Paramount Pictures Corporation.  Actors represented by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists went on strike Friday amid concerns about artificial intelligence replacing jobs and the impact of streaming services
