Employees Who Work With AI More Likely To Suffer Loneliness: Study

Image
[ad_1] According to a study released by the American Psychological Association, employees who often engage with artificial intelligence systems are more likely to suffer loneliness, which can contribute to sleeplessness and increased after-work drinking. Researchers conducted four experiments in the U.S., Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia. Findings were consistent across cultures. The research was published online in the Journal of Applied Psychology. In a prior career, lead researcher Pok Man Tang, PhD, worked in an investment bank where he used AI systems, which led to his interest in researching the timely issue. "The rapid advancement in AI systems is sparking a new industrial revolution that is reshaping the workplace with many benefits but also some uncharted dangers, including potentially damaging mental and physical impacts for employees," said Tang, an assistant professor of management at the University of Georgia. "Humans are social animals, and isolating

New Grammy rule addresses artificial intelligence, says

Image
[ad_1] The Recording Academy are making several changes to the Grammy Awards, including a rule that stipulates "only human creators" can win the music industry's highest honor in a decision aimed at the use of artificial intelligence in popular music. "A work that contains no human authorship is not eligible in any category," they said, under new "Artificial Intelligence (AI) Protocols" released Friday. The rule was set following the semiannual academy's board of trustees meeting last month, where it was determined that work that features elements of AI are eligible, as long as a human creator is responsible for a "meaningful" contribution to the music and/or lyrics. "The human authorship component of the work submitted must be meaningful," the new requirements read in part. The news arrives shortly after Paul McCartney announced on Tuesday that a forthcoming "last Beatles

Microsoft pulls computer-generated article that recommended tourists visit the Ottawa Food Bank

Image
[ad_1] Microsoft has pulled a computer-generated travel article on Ottawa, Canada, that included an eyebrow-raising recommendation. Along with popular tourist spots like Parliament Hill, the piece endorsed visiting the Ottawa Food Bank.  The now-deleted article , published this week on Microsoft's MSN website, is the latest in a long list of flubs from various news sites online that employ technology using algorithms and AI for creating content. The MSN article included the food bank as one of Ottawa's "cannot miss" tourist destinations, prompting a backlash from some readers on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.  "Microsoft is really hitting it out of the park with its AI-generated travel stories," one X user  said in a post. "If you visit Ottawa, it highly recommends the Ottawa Food Bank and provides a great tip for tourists: 'Consider going into it on an empty stomach.'" The tou

How BMW uses A.I. to make vehicle assembly more efficient

Image
[ad_1] Artificial intelligence is making a big effect on the auto industry. Revenue from sales of autonomous vehicles is anticipated to top $70 billion by 2033, according to Future Market Insights. But self-driving cars powered by AI are not the only change — AI technology is already being infused into vehicle production.  As part of that industry-wide trend, the BMW Group is now shifting gears to rely more heavily on AI to create a leaner and more efficient manufacturing process.  Inside BMW'S plant Spartanburg in South Carolina. CNBC Over the past few years, BMW has upgraded its Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant to include new AI capabilities. The factory spans more than 8 million square feet and produces about 60% of all BMWs sold in the U.S. That works out to more than 1,500 vehicles produced daily. In the body shop, robots weld between 300 and 400 metal studs onto the frame of every SUV. That's about half a million studs each day applied by machines and now managed

AI could revolutionize dentistry. Here's how.

Image
[ad_1] New forms of artificial intelligence are already changing how we write, communicate with our doctors and even create art . But the rapidly evolving technology could soon have a permanent fixture in a more sensitive environment: our mouths. Hundreds of dental offices across the U.S. are now using AI-powered X-ray imaging technology from Boston-based VideaHealth. The software helps dentists deal with routine procedures, such as identifying cavities, as well as spot more serious conditions, including periodontal disease, or bone loss within the mouth often linked with diseases like diabetes or Alzheimer's.  The overarching goal is to use AI not only to improve patients' oral health, but also to identify potential risks for non-oral diseases, VideaHealth CEO Florien Hillen told CBS MoneyWatch. "I was at MIT doing AI research in breast cancer, chest X-rays and the entire radiology spectrum," he said. "And I realized th
