Smog-ridden New Delhi extends schools shutdown till Nov 10 - SUCH TV

Image
[ad_1] Authorities in the smog-ridden Indian capital New Delhi on Sunday extended an emergency school closure by a week, with no signs of improvement in the megacity’s choking levels of pollution. Every autumn New Delhi is blanketed in acrid smog, primarily blamed on stubble burning by farmers in the neighbouring agrarian states. The city is regularly ranked as one of the most polluted on the planet, with its annual smog blamed for hundreds of thousands of premature deaths each year. “As pollution levels continue to remain high, primary schools in Delhi will stay closed till 10th November,” Delhi state’s education minister Atishi posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Secondary schools “are being given the option of shifting to online classes”, added Atishi, who uses only one name, after days of high pollution levels. The Indian capital — which has a population of 30 million — once again ranked as the world’s most polluted city Sunday, according to monitoring firm IQAir.

Silent Threat: How Indoor Pollution Impacts Cognitive Health? Expert Shares

Image
[ad_1] In the quest for a healthy lifestyle, many individuals focus on outdoor air quality, often overlooking the potential hazards lurking within their homes. Recent research has underscored the significant impact of indoor pollution on cognitive health, revealing a disturbing connection between the air we breathe indoors and the well-being of our minds. From infants to the elderly, the adverse effects of poor indoor air quality extend across all age groups, manifesting in neurological impairment, cognitive decline, and even contributing to the early onset of dementia. In an interview with Zee News English, Dr Richa Mittal, Consultant, Pulmonary Medicine at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai talks about how indoor pollution can affect your heart, lungs and overall health. Impact of Pollution on Cognitive Health 1. Neurological and Cognitive Impairment in Children: Robust data supports the link between indoor pollution and cognitive health, especially in children.

Children Living Near Heavily Used Highways More At Risk To Develop Atopic Dermatitis: Study

Image
[ad_1] The harmful impact of traffic-related air pollution on respiratory health has been thoroughly documented, but National Jewish Health experts are also looking at how rising pollutants affect another health area - allergic disease. According to a recent study, highly travelled highways in the state of Colorado have negative effects on skin health in children, increasing the possibility of developing atopic dermatitis. Children who lived at least a thousand metres away from heavily used highways had a decreased risk of developing atopic dermatitis than those who lived within 500 meters. "These findings highlight the importance of having environmental interventions designed to decrease exposure to traffic in young children," said Jessica Hui, MD, senior author of the study, and a pediatric allergist and immunologist at National Jewish Health. Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, commonly occurs in children and can lead to a progression of allergic diseases, also known a

Exposure To Air Pollution During Pregnancy Enhances Risk Of Respiratory Infections: Study

Image
[ad_1] Exposure to ultrafine particles during pregnancy enhances the risk of respiratory viral infection, shows a study. During pregnancy, women are more susceptible to severe respiratory infections from multiple viruses, including influenza A virus (IAV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). In addition, pregnant women are disproportionately affected by influenza, resulting in a more than 10-fold increase in hospitalisation risk. "We know that air pollution affects the pulmonary immune system, making individuals more susceptible to viral infections," said Dr Natalie Johnson, associate professor at the Texas A&M University School of Public Health. In the study, published in the journal Particle and Fibre Toxicology, the team pointed out that there are several physiological characteristics that explain maternal susceptibility to viral infection.
