Covid Infection May Accelerate Dementia Progression In Patients: Study

Image
[ad_1] Infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus may significantly accelerate dementia in patients already suffering from the neurodegenerative condition, according to a study conducted in West Bengal. The research, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease Reports, found that participants with all subtypes of dementia experienced rapidly progressive dementia following infection with SARS-CoV-2. Insights into the impact of Covid-19 on human cognition have so far remained unclear, with neurologists referring to it as "brain fog." The researchers investigated the effects of Covid-19 on cognitive impairment in 14 patients with preexisting dementia who had suffered further cognitive deterioration following the infection with SARS-CoV-2. The patients included four with Alzheimer's disease, five with vascular dementia, three with Parkinson's disease, and two with the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia. They were recruited out of a total of 550 patie

Disrupted Sleep In 30s May Increase Memory, Thinking Problems Later: Study

Image
[ad_1] People who have more disrupted sleep in their 30s and 40s may be more likely to have memory and thinking problems a decade later, according to new research. The study, published in the journal Neurology, does not prove that sleep quality causes cognitive decline. It only shows an association. "Given that signs of Alzheimer's disease start to accumulate in the brain several decades before symptoms begin, understanding the connection between sleep and cognition earlier in life is critical for understanding the role of sleep problems as a risk factor for the disease," said Yue Leng, from the University of California, San Francisco. "Our findings indicate that the quality rather than the quantity of sleep matters most for cognitive health in middle age," Leng added. The study involved 526 people with an average age of 40. They were followed for 11 years. Also read: How Can Lifestyle Factors Reduce The Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease Researchers l

Vision Loss In Senior Citizens May Signal Risk Of Dementia: Study

Image
[ad_1] Sight loss in people over 71 years old may be linked to dementia, suggests a new study. The researchers at the University of Michigan in the US analysed data from nearly 3,000 US citizens over 71 years old. They tested the participants' eyesight and recorded their scores for short-distance vision, long-distance vision and how well they were able to distinguish objects against different backgrounds. The findings, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Ophthalmology, showed that participants with sight loss were more likely to have dementia compared to people with no problems with their vision. Up to 40 per cent of dementia cases could be influenced by 12 risk factors which we may prevent or influence, such as smoking, high blood pressure and hearing loss. Sight loss is not currently one of these 12 important risk factors, but the new evidence suggests that there is a link between sight loss and dementia, the researchers said. cre Trendi
