It also marks the birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate – Marie Curie, a Polish-French physicist and chemist born in 1867. National Cancer Awareness Day 2023: 6 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Cancer

  1. Maintain Healthy WeightAccording to the Siteman Cancer Institute, a healthy weight plays an important role in lowering the risk of cancer. Obesity increases several types of cancer and therefore it is important to pay attention to your calorie intake. Maintaining a healthy weight has amazing benefits so consume fewer calories and burn it with any regular physical activity. Consider having small portions of meals and avoid sugary beverages.
  2. Avoid Tobacco ConsumptionSmoking has been linked to various cancers like lung, mouth, throat, voice box, pancreatic, cervix, kidney cancer, and bladder. Passive smoking also heightens the risk of lung cancer. Choosing to stay tobacco-free or committing to quit is a crucial move in cancer prevention. Consult with a doctor to enhance your chances of success through cessation support. It’s also crucial to have conversations with your children about the hazards of smoking, vaping, and using smokeless tobacco.
  3. Healthy DietAvoid the consumption of saturated fat and red meat to lower the risk of colon cancer. Instead, add fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your every meal. Add chicken, fish, or beans over red and processed meats for protein intake. Consider taking a multivitamin if your diet falls short of important nutrients.
  4. Limit AlcoholLimit alcohol to reduce the risk of cancer. Even small amounts, like half to one drink a day; can increase the chances of breast and colon cancer. Opting for zero alcohol is the healthiest choice. Consult a healthcare professional if you feel you have difficulty in leaving alcohol.
  5. Protection from the SunAlthough the warm sun can be enjoyable, excessive exposure to it can increase the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. Tanning beds pose similar risks. Skin damage can begin in childhood, making it crucial to safeguard children. When out in the sun, use sunscreens with an SPF of more than 30 for protection. You can also consider wearing hats, long-sleeve shirts, and sunglasses.
  6. Exercise RegularlyExercising regularly is one of the best things for your body. Consider aiming for at least 30 minutes every day for physical activities like walking, swimming, dancing, or going to the gym. Make it a routine to exercise every day at the same time, whether it is during lunchtime or an after-dinner walk.
