[ad_1] A waitress delivers sushi orders at Masa Hibachi Steakhouse & Sushi in Silver Spring, Maryland. Bill O'Leary | The Washington Post | Getty Images Warmer weather usually boosts restaurant sales, but diners may hold back for the second straight summer as inflation weighs on consumers' minds — and wallets. "I think operators are still hopeful for a good summer boon in foot traffic and sales ... but I think on the consumer side, they're more hesitant," said Huy Do, research and insights manager at market research firm Datassential. Last year, consumers pulled back on their restaurant visits in May, June and July amid inflation concerns. In addition to higher restaurant bills , diners were also paying more at the gas pump and in grocery stores. Salad chain Sweetgreen said its sales slowed after Memorial Day and blamed the trend on a range of factors, including erratic returns to offices and surging summer travel. [ad_1] The first time Maria Anita Antonaccio and Harry Douglas Gural met — at lunch on Easter Sunday in 2018 — they weren’t focused on each other. They were visiting their mothers at a senior living community in Lewisburg, Pa. Mr. Gural, 63, had driven four hours from Washington, where he was working as a senior adviser to Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, Democrat of New York, to visit his mother, Ruth Gural, whom he had recently moved to an apartment at the facility after the death of her husband and Mr. Gural’s father. “I remember being very struck by Harry,” said Ms. Antonaccio, also 63, who visited her mother every day. “He was very articulate.” An academic who had written two books on the ideas of the British novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch , she wasn’t used to seeing someone like him at the senior facility. He had noticed her too — he had given her arm a little squeeze when he said goodbye on Easter, but with Ruth between them at a large table, they hadn’t had a chan...

[ad_1] Prince Harry, Meghan Markle 'lived professionally worst year' of lives Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have seemingly lived the worst year of their lives in 2023, days expert. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who recently shot for a promotional video for their Archewell Foundation, have done so for face saving after a tough year. Royal expert Kinsey Schofield told GB News: "I think that this has been professionally the worst year of Harry and Meghan’s lives. "This is not a video they typically release around this time. They usually release this video in January of a recap of everything they’ve done. She concludes: "I think they’re trying to distract from the fact that everybody is recognising that they failed hard this year and they don’t want to move into 2024 with this stamp of losers on their foreheads." Prince Harry left the Royal Family back in 2020 alongside wife Meghan Markle and son, Prince Archie. The couple later accused the Royal Fami...

Image
[ad_1] Traders work the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Getty Images Stock futures were near flat Wednesday night as investors considered what the latest data suggested about the health of the broader economy. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 12 points, trading near flat. S&P 500 futures slipped 0.07%, and Nasdaq-100 futures declined 0.13%. During regular trading Wednesday, the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite performed the worst of the three major indexes, losing nearly 1.1%. The S&P 500 dipped about 0.3%. The Dow bucked the trend, rising 0.2% in part because of outperformance from health-care stocks. Those moves come as investors digest the latest data released this week to see if the labor market has shown signs of weakening. The ADP private payrolls report released Wednesday showed job growth slowed in March. Meanwhile, a Tuesday report showed that the number of available positions fell below 10 million in February — a first in almost tw...

Originally set for October 31, 2024, the new deadline is now November 15, 2024, according to the Ministry of Finance. This extension applies to income tax returns for the fiscal year 2023-24, now due by November 15. Specific taxpayers under income tax law are required to complete an income tax audit and submit the report by September 30 of the assessment year. Sandeep Jhunjhunwala, tax partner at Nangia Anderson LLP clarified that this extension doesn’t affect deadlines for the Tax Audit Report, transfer pricing certification in Form 3CEB, or other forms like Form 10DA, which will still need to be submitted by October 31, 2024. Perspective | Jorie Graham, looking to the future, has a warning for us

Image
[ad_1] Comment on this story Comment When I first met Jorie Graham around 1980, at a literary party somewhere in the Village, she was a film student at New York University, where, passing a lecture hall on campus one day, she heard words that had changed her life. Slipping into the back of the lecture hall, she discovered, listening to the critic M.L. Rosenthal, that she had heard the final line of T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”: “Till human voices wake us, and we drown.” At that moment, she knew herself a poet. This sounded not so much like the lightning bolt of Rilke’s clarion call (“You must change your life”) but rather recognition of a new language, beyond the three she already had (French, Italian, English). This was the poet’s tongue, overheard in its vocal intensity. If this was a soul awakening, it was eerily prophetic: the sound of a human voice waking a poet to a lifelong immersion in poetry. Six poems that celebrate magic acts of living This seeming...

Giuliani ordered to immediately pay $148 million to Georgia election workers he defamed

Image
[ad_1] Rudy Giuliani must immediately pay $148 million to two Georgia election workers he defamed , with a federal judge suggesting the former New York mayor may have been dishonest about his finances and expressing concern he might not comply with the judgment. The latest twist in the defamation case comes just days after Giuliani was ordered to pay $148 million to the two women, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea "Shaye" Moss. Giuliani had falsely claimed in the wake of the 2020 presidential election that they engaged in a fake ballot processing scheme while they served as election workers.  In a scathing ruling on Wednesday, Judge Beryl Howell questioned Giuliani's objections that he couldn't afford to pay a large monetary award. "Such claims of Giuliani's 'financial difficulties' — no matter how many times repeated or publicly disseminated and duly reported in the media — are difficult to square with the fact that Giuliani affords a spoke...

A move towards sustainable alternatives | The Express Tribune

Image
[ad_1] KARACHI: The most valuable quality that a socially conscious and responsible business can demonstrate to its stakeholders is its understanding that profits cannot be achieved without integrating people and the planet into its purpose. A rise in this approach can be observed in how organisations are rethinking their approach to conventional CSR. They are endeavouring to infuse sustainability with their strategic objectives, thereby improving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting. Due to the pressure from investors, regulators, and consumers, corporates are shifting their products and processes to become more sustainable and inclusive, and tangibly reflecting on how they are contributing to the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDGs serve to prompt governments, the public sector, and society at large to put ethical and pressing issues at the heart of policy, processes, and decision-making. The goals function as a set of guiding pri...
