The lack of blood deprives the spinal cord of oxygen and nutrients, "damaging or even killing the cells in the spinal cord," according to  Northwestern Medicine .  Some of the symptoms of spinal cord strokes include aching or weakness in the legs, sharp back pain, or burning back pain, according to the  National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke .  Spinal cord strokes are incredibly rare, accounting for just 0.3-1% of all strokes, but ...

Jake Tapper imagines what would happen if Evel Knievel ran for president

Image
[ad_1] Comment on this story Comment Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Republicans are divided between die-hard loyalists of their former leader — a polarizing ex-president, accused of abusing his power — and those who want to leave him in the past. The current president, a Democrat, struggles in the polls, his approval rating sinking as fuel prices rise. Veterans complain of illness after returning from a protracted and ultimately failed war abroad, suspecting toxic chemical exposure. A sizable swath of the public clamors for the government to approve a controversial medical treatment that’s either a cheap miracle drug or pure snake oil. This is 1977 — or at least, as Jake Tapper presents it in his new novel, “ All the Demons Are Here .” The first two thrillers by CNN’s lead Washington anchor, “ The Hellfire Club ” and “ The Devil May Dance ,” followed a young politician, Charlie Marder, and his zoologist wife, Margaret, through the 1950s and ’60s, their paths crossing wi...

I’ve gotta distance myself from it,” Stamos said. However, Stamos explained how a dinner with Ryan Gosling changed his mind. “He’s like, ‘You’re a Disney fan, aren’t you?’” the actor recalled. “I say yeah. He goes, ‘I’m obsessed. I’m a Disney adult. Review | ‘Biography of X’ is a brilliant novel that remixes art and history

Image
[ad_1] Comment on this story Comment Catherine Lacey’s brilliant, astonishing new novel, “ Biography of X ,” is presented to the reader as a book by a fictional character, a journalist named C. M. Lucca. More than a year after the death of her wife, a renowned and notorious artist who called herself X, Lucca embarks on a mission to uncover the most basic facts of her spouse’s life: her real name, the date and place of her birth. It’s 1997, and Theodore Smith’s unauthorized biography of X, “A Woman Without a History,” has just been published to fantastic acclaim. Like all biographies, Smith’s is false. How can the infinite contours of any one life be contained in a book? As Lacey-as-Lucca observes: “People are, it seems, too complicated to sit still inside a narrative”; or, as X herself remarks in an interview Lacey imagines with the real-life critic and curator Robert Storr, people “don’t stay the same unless they’re dead.” “The trouble with knowing people,” Lucca writes, “is how ...
