Health surprise: Hibernating bears may help us beat blood clots, says new research

Image
[ad_1] Hibernating bears can’t help us escape long plane flights or unforgiving winters — but they may help us prevent blood clots. The bears, during hibernation, prevent blood clots in their own bodies by keeping a low level of a key protein in their blood, according to a new study published in Science. Now, the researchers hope their findings can be applied to developing future medications in humans that can mimic the way nature prevents blood clots in bears. BLOOD CLOT SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR The researchers compared blood samples from 13  wild brown bears during the winter while they were hibernating with blood samples during the summer when the bears were more active. They specifically looked at platelets — which help the blood form clots — finding that the hibernating bears' blood samples had platelets that were less likely to clump together than the samples taken of the bears during the summer. Eastern Congo hit by IS-linked rebel attacks; 45 civilians killed

Image
[ad_1] The death toll from several attacks this week by extremist rebels in eastern Congo has risen to at least 45 people, local officials said on Friday. Dozens of people were killed by rebels using machetes over two days when rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces , a militia with links to the Islamic State group, killed civilians in several villages in North Kivu province, said Saidi Balikwisha, the province's deputy. "Here, three or four days don't go by without us recording deaths, the result of barbarity of the ADF terrorists. That is why once again, we repeat, we need a considerable military force to come that can contribute to the restoration of peace," he said. Little has been done to help others whose homes were burned down by the rebels , he said. A local hospital in Northern Ghana initially indicated that Samed had a height of 9 feet, 6 inches (2.89 metres), but it was later found that the clinic lacked the proper measurement equipment, reported the BBC . Samed has a gigantism diagnosis and has never stopped expanding. Everyone knows Samed better by his alias Awuche. A 16-foot measuring tape was used by a BBC reporter to gauge his height. "The way they measure me, I cannot say everything is perfect," Awuche told BBC . The ruler indicated 7 feet 4 inches. "Wow, so what does it mean?" Awuche asked with his signature smile. The tallest man alive, the journalist told him, was a foot and 2.8 inches taller than him. Howeve

Analysis | Republicans are ‘owning’ the message of abandoning Ukraine

Image
[ad_1] Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) on Tuesday grew despondent at the idea of leading a delegation to the upcoming Munich Security Conference as Congress had yet to approve additional money to help back Ukraine’s war against Russia. Whitehouse summed up his feelings in one word: “Crappy.” By Thursday, however, the tide had shifted and a bipartisan collection of 67 senators voted to open debate on a $95 billion security measure, with almost two-thirds of that directed toward Ukraine. A final vote could come by midweek just as roughly 30 senators are slated to head to Europe. Yes, the deal could still fall apart in the Senate and its prospects in the increasingly nativist House remain up in the air, but Whitehouse practically had a bounce in his step after that vote. “We may be less empty-handed, TBD,” he said. The annual security conference has long served as an annual show of cross-Atlantic unity, providing each party’s internationalist wing a chance to tout its vision of U.S.

According to Dr Venkataswamy Eswarachari, Scientist & Lab Director, MedGenome, "Genetic information guides the development of personalized care plans, including tailoring diets, monitoring developmental milestones, and offering specialized care.
