Simmons, Embiid 'duke it out' before wild crowd

Image
[ad_1] 1:15 AM ET Tim Bontemps ESPN PHILADELPHIA -- The fans here in the City of Brotherly Love waited almost a year to see Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid face each other as opponents for the first time in an NBA game. It didn't disappoint. In front of a raucous sellout crowd at Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday night, it was the 76ers who came away with a thrilling 137-133 victory over the Brooklyn Nets -- though the score was a mere backdrop to the ongoing drama surrounding Simmons and Embiid finally facing one another. "Nothing," said Embiid, when asked about how it felt going up against Simmons for the first time. "Just, like every single night, [I am trying to] just freaking kill whoever is in front of me. My mentality is always about scoring. If I get doubled, make the right pass, but if I get played one-on-one, or I see an opportunity to go score, I'm going to go score." Just a minute into the game, Embiid aggressively posted up Simmons -- the fir

U.S., South Korea and Japan to step up actions on North Korea cyber threats

Image
[ad_1] The United States, South Korea and Japan agreed new initiatives on Saturday to respond to North Korea’s threats in cyberspace , including cryptocurrency abuses and space launches, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said. The three countries’ national security advisers met in Seoul as Pyongyang warned that it would deploy more spy satellites. Sullivan said the meeting followed up on commitments set forth at a Camp David trilateral summit hosted by President Joe Biden in August, where leaders of the U.S. and its two key Asian allies pledged to deepen security and economic cooperation. “We’ve also launched new trilateral initiatives to counter the threats posed by the DPRK, from its cybercrime and cryptocurrency money laundering to its reckless space and ballistic missile tests,” Sullivan told reporters, referring to North Korea by the initials of its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. His Japanese counterpart Takeo Akiba said North

Firefighters in Greece have discovered the bodies of 18 people in an area with a major wildfire - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] ALEXANDROUPOLIS: Firefighters on Tuesday found the burnt bodies of 18 people believed to have been migrants who had crossed the Turkish border into an area of northeastern Greece where wildfires have raged for days. The discovery near the city of Alexandroupolis came as hundreds of firefighters battled dozens of wildfires across the country amid gale-force winds. On Monday, two people died and two firefighters were injured in separate fires in northern and central Greece. With their hot, dry summers, southern European countries are particularly prone to wildfires. Another major blaze has been burning across Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands for a week, although no injuries or damage to homes was reported. European Union officials have blamed climate change for the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires in Europe, noting that 2022 was the second-worst year for wildfire damage on record after 2017. In Greece, police activated the country's Disaster Vi

No economic stabilisation after elections either: Shabbar Zaidi

Image
[ad_1] Former Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) chief Shabbar Zaidi. — Twitter/File LAHORE: Former Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) chief Shabbar Zaidi said Saturday the economy would not stabilise after the general elections as Pakistan sees one of its worst financial crises. "I don't see betterment in the economy after elections. The government which comes into power after the elections will not be able to survive even a year," he said while addressing an event in Lahore. Pakistan has failed to shore up foreign exchange reserves in the last year as it faces an uphill task in arranging external financing amid a stalled bailout programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). "A national government should be formed post-elections. The current government does not have the capability to run the country," Zaidi, a chartered accountant by profession, said. He mentioned that Pakistan was fast heading towards economic failure. The ex-FBR chairman said F

Fans storm the field after Clemson pulls off upset of Notre Dame in thriller

Image
[ad_1] After playing on the road more than a month, the Clemson Tigers returned home and delivered an upset win over Notre Dame. Clemson hung on for the 31-23 victory despite losing running back Will Shipley to an injury. Junior Phil Mafah filled in for Shipley, gained 186 yards and scored two touchdowns.  Swinney's success at Clemson has created expectations the program should compete for championships every year. Earlier this week, Swinney pushed back against a radio caller who was referred to as " Tyler from Spartanburg. "  The caller was critical of the current state of the Tigers, who entered this week with four losses. Swinney strongly rebuked the criticism, and it appears the coach's passionate response may have fired up the team heading into Saturday's game with Notre Dame. Obesity linked to neurodegeneration through insulin resistance, find researchers - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] CALIFORNIA: Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre in the United States, led by Mroj Alassaf, have established a relationship between obesity and neurodegenerative illnesses like as Alzheimer's disease. The study, which used the common fruit fly, found that a high-sugar diet -- a hallmark of obesity -- induces insulin resistance in the brain, which lowers the ability to eliminate neuronal debris, raising the risk of neurodegeneration . The study, which was published in the open access journal PLOS Biology, will have an impact on medications meant to minimise the chance of acquiring neurodegenerative illnesses. Although obesity is known to be a risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, exactly how one leads to the other remains a mystery. The new study focused on answering this question by taking advantage of the similarity between humans and fruit flies. Having previously shown that a hig

The young sued US state on climate change and won - Times of India

Image
[ad_1] Young environmental activists scored what experts described as a ground-breaking legal victory Monday when a Montana judge said state agencies were violating their constitutional right to a clean and healthful environment by allowing fossil fuel development. The Montana case, brought by plaintiffs ranging in age from 5 to 22, was the first of its kind to go to trial in the US. The ruling adds to a small number of legal decisions around the world that have established a government duty to protect citizens from climate change . If it stands, the ruling could set an important legal precedent, though experts said the immediate impacts are limited and state officials pledged to seek to overturn the decision on appeal. District court judge Kathy Seeley found the policy the Montana state uses in evaluating requests for fossil fuel permits - which does not allow agencies to look at greenhouse gas emissions - to be unconstitutional. It marks the first time a US court has ruled agai

Iran — which has armed, trained and funded the Houthis — stepped up its weapons supplies to the militia in the wake of the war in Gaza, which erupted after Iranian-backed militants Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, the four regional sources said. Tehran has provided advanced drones, anti-ship cruise missiles, precision-strike ballistic missiles and medium-range missiles to the Houthis, who started targeting commercial vessels in November in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, the sources said. IRGC commanders and advisers are also providing know-how, data and in
