Abu Dhabi, UAE CNN  —  When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his decision to delay a controversial plan to weaken the country’s judiciary on Monday, he invoked the biblical story of the Judgement of Solomon, where the king had to rule between two women, both claiming to be the mother of a child. Solomon ordered that the child be cut in two, and the woman who protested the ruling was determined to be the real mother. Before Netanyahu spoke, supporters of the judicial overhaul had gathered in the streets following calls from right-wing politicians to come out, allowing the prime minister to make his address as protesters from both sides rallied simultaneously for the first time in weeks.

The beleaguered home goods chain made the filing Sunday in U.S. District Court in New Jersey, listing its estimated assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion and $10 billion. The move comes after the company failed to secure funds to stay afloat. In a statement, the company based in Union, New Jersey, said it voluntarily made the filing "to implement an orderly wind down of its businesses while conducting a limited marketing process to solicit interest in one or more sales of some or all of its assets." The firm said its 360 Bed Bath & Beyond and 120 Buy Buy Baby stores and websites will remain open and continue serving customers as it "begins its efforts to effectuate the closure of its retail locations."

[ad_1] Brazil's government is directing $30 million to bolster school safety in the wake of a deadly hatchet attack on a day care that left four children dead and five other kids injured.  By the determination of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Justice Minister Flávio Dino tweeted that 150 million reais – $30 million – would be directed from the nation’s public security fund to shore up school safety. The funds would be allocated to help state police and municipal guards, he said.  After meeting with representatives from student associations in light of the attack, Dino told reporters in Brasília that money will pay for both heightened policing and an expansion of a Brasilia-based team "for the monitoring of deep-web communities, places on the internet where hate speech and violence can be glorified," according to the Associated Press.  Authorities have not released a motive for the so far unidentified suspect who allegedly hopped the wall of the Cant

Abu Dhabi, UAE CNN  —  As the Ukraine war approaches the one-year mark , the United States is ramping up efforts to choke off Russia’s economy and it has set its sight on the Middle East. A top US Treasury official arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday to warn the regional business hub that helping Moscow evade sanctions wouldn’t be without consequences. Charles III Was Crowned King. But Can He Ever Be the Star?

Image
[ad_1] It is always a challenge to introduce a major cast change in a long-running serial. Saturday morning, in a special episode with elements of “The Crown” and “Succession,” King Charles III finally became the focal figure of the royal ensemble — if only for a day. The coronation of a British ruler is, of course, a political ritual and a religious ceremony. But it is also, as the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 established, a TV show. It’s an anachronistic assertion of divine right retooled to recognize that, in the electronic era, even hereditary rulers have to argue their relevance. Charles’s coronation was a full-color spectacle, showing off the peacocked glory of British tradition and the bells and whistles of 21st-century TV. Britain brought out its finest garments, its finest relics, its finest rain. The networks took in all the splendor they could capture on camera; there were even graphics offering an X-ray of Westminster Abbey. The term “fairy tale” was deployed

REUTERS KABUL: Shamila doesn't have a photo of the baby son who died in her arms in freezing temperatures at their home in Kabul this month, but she remembers his face perfectly.  "He had a white and bright face, big eyes, a small nose and black hair," she said. Three-month old Amrullah was one of at least 171 people who have died due to the cold weather in Afghanistan in recent weeks, in a bitter freezing snap that has hit just as the country is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis. The United Nations has said 28 million Afghans, many of them children, are in need of urgent assistance during the coldest winter in 15 years, which has seen temperatures dip as low as -29.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Many aid groups have partially suspended operations in recent weeks due to a Taliban administration ruling that most female NGO workers are forbidd
