Chip Somodevilla | Getty Images Five of Pfizer's drugs will cost less for Medicare recipients starting next month as part of President Joe Biden's plan to lower prescription drug costs, the Department of Health and Human Services said Wednesday.  Pfizer's drugs are among the first set of 27 Part B prescription drugs that will be subject to Medicare inflation rebates starting April 1, according to the department. That requires Pfizer and other prescription drug companies to refund Medicare through rebates because the prices for those drugs rose faster than the rate of inflation.  Pfizer's drugs include the blood thinner Fragmin , which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1994. It also includes Atgam , a medicine used to treat symptoms of Renal

How do you find out your blood type if you don't know? - SUCH TV

Image
[ad_1] Is your blood type A, B, a combination of the two, or something else? You don’t know, you say? Many people are in the same boat. In fact, only 62% of Americans reported knowing their blood type. Those letters (and pluses and minuses) can be crucial information in an emergency, and there are simple but accurate ways to find out. Most blood types are only compatible with a handful of others, according to Dr. Dayand Borge, Divisional Chief Medical Officer at the American Red Cross. Luckily, there are easy ways to find out your blood type. Ask your parents or doctor. Before you go out of your way to try any of the other methods, check with your parents first. They may know or have old health records that include your blood type. You can also reach out to your health care provider, who may have that information on file. Blood draw Next time you go in to get your blood drawn, ask to know your blood type. If you’ve had blood drawn in the past, you can call the lab to see i

The Organ Is Still Working. But It’s Not in a Body Anymore.

Image
[ad_1] On some level, the human liver in the operating room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago was alive. Blood circulating through its tissues delivered oxygen and removed waste products, and the organ produced bile and proteins that are essential to the body. But the donor had died a day earlier, and the liver lay inside a boxy plastic device. The organ owed its vitality to this machine, which was preserving it for transplantation into a needy patient. “It’s a little bit science fiction,” said Dr. Daniel Borja-Cacho, a transplant surgeon at the hospital. Surgeons are experimenting with organs from genetically modified animals , hinting at a future when they could be a source for transplants. But the field is already undergoing a paradigm shift, driven by technologies in widespread use that allow clinicians to temporarily store organs outside the body. Perfusion, as its called, is changing every aspect of the organ transplant process, from the way surgeons operate, to t

East Kent: A decade of failure in maternity care

Image
[ad_1] At the heart of the trust's problems, it seems, is a dysfunctional culture that stretches back almost a decade. In 2015, a review of its maternity services by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists found multiple problems, including consultants failing to carry out ward rounds, assess women or attend out-of-hours calls. The report was dismissed as "a load of rubbish" by the trust. A Maternity Improvement Plan, overseen by NHS England, was devised. However, by the end of 2019 fewer than a quarter of its action points had been completed. 4 Things You Need to Know About Health Care Cyberattacks

Image
[ad_1] The recent cyberattack on the billing and payment colossus Change Healthcare revealed just how serious the vulnerabilities are throughout the U.S. health care system, and alerted industry leaders and policymakers to the urgent need for better digital security. Hospitals, health insurers, physician clinics and others in the industry have increasingly been the targets of significant hacks, culminating in the assault on Change, a unit of the giant UnitedHealth Group, on Feb. 21. The ransomware attack on the nation’s largest clearinghouse, which handles a third of all patient records, had widespread effects. Fixes and workarounds have alleviated some distress, but providers are still unable to collect billions of dollars in payments. Many smaller hospitals and medical offices are still having trouble getting paid more than a month after Change was first forced to shut down many of its systems. Even now, very little information about the exact nature and scope of the attack has

Is the New 988 Suicide Hotline Working?

Image
[ad_1] The contestants on “Celebrity Jeopardy!” were stumped in the fall when asked about the new “3-digit national hotline phone number for suicide prevention” in the United States, which debuted last July. “What is 311?” the comedian Iliza Shlesinger guessed, wrongly. As it turns out, she was not alone. It has been one year since the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline underwent a transformation, recasting its 10-digit number as 988, yet many people are unaware of the change or what the hotline provides. The new number is supposed to make it easier for callers to connect with help when they’re having suicidal thoughts, experiencing emotional distress or having a substance-use-related crisis, but only 17 percent of Americans say they are very or somewhat familiar with it, according to a survey released on Thursday by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. In addition, the survey found, people are still confused about what to expect when they call. Many still assume that “you

Health surprise: Hibernating bears may help us beat blood clots, says new research

Image
[ad_1] Hibernating bears can’t help us escape long plane flights or unforgiving winters — but they may help us prevent blood clots. The bears, during hibernation, prevent blood clots in their own bodies by keeping a low level of a key protein in their blood, according to a new study published in Science. Now, the researchers hope their findings can be applied to developing future medications in humans that can mimic the way nature prevents blood clots in bears. BLOOD CLOT SYMPTOMS TO LOOK OUT FOR The researchers compared blood samples from 13  wild brown bears during the winter while they were hibernating with blood samples during the summer when the bears were more active. They specifically looked at platelets — which help the blood form clots — finding that the hibernating bears' blood samples had platelets that were less likely to clump together than the samples taken of the bears during the summer.
